About
The term tree surgeon is used in the UK to describe an arborist. This is a college-based qualification where specialist agricultural colleges in the UK provide hands-on instructor training in all aspects of tree care. The courses are structured through a nationally accredited body, LANTRA. Every segment has an onsite test for the candidate. National assessors look for a degree of competency in practical and academic knowledge before the candidate is permitted to progress to the next level. Each segment is awarded an NPTC (National Proficiency Training Council) number and ID Card.
Outside of the UK, the most recognizable international standard in arboriculture is that offered by the ISA (International Society of Arboriculture). Karre and Simon have become ISA Certified Arborists as they are based here in the USA,
There are three principal areas of the tree industry: urban, utility, and commercial (silviculture) forestry. Simon has worked in all three for over 25 years but specialized in urban forestry and silviculture where the range of necessary skills has been the most rewarding.
Before arriving in the USA, six years were spent in France in the southern oak forests of the Quercy, Midi-Pyrenees region whilst maintaining an existing client base in the UK. Simon is exceptionally proud to have his wife, Karre, who is also an ISA Certified Arborist and a graduate of the University of Florida with a bachelor's degree in environmental management, trained in Phase I & II Environmental Site Assessments, works in all aspects of their tree care business, having begun her tree career with Simon in France and is now an integral part of their growing business in the USA. Karre heads up the research, restoration, and design division of Stratford Tree.
